Editors Note: I’m traveling this week. So if I’m slow to respond to comments, please be patient. I’m a huge fan of Karol Gajda, the writer behind Ridiculously Extraordinary Freedom. Karol writes kick ass content about minimalism, travel, business, and living in the present. A few weeks ago I wrote a post called How to Achieve Your Dreams and Karol is an example of a person who is living his dreams, by building community and doing what he loves. Keep reading to learn more about Karol’s story and new informational...
« Organizing the unorganized | Blog Home | Paperback Kindle » Six things about deadlines People don't like deadlines. They mean a decision, shipping and risk. They force us to decide. Deadlines work. Products that are about to disappear, auctions that are about to end, tickets that are about to sell out--they create forward motion. Deadlines make people do dumb things. Every time I offer a free digital document or an educational event that has a deadline, I can guarantee I will...

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg believes NYC’s start-up center “Silicon Alley,” is superior to California’s Silicon Valley in a number of ways; everything from IT and advertising to fashion and culture as he’s touted numerous times at conferences over the past several months. And it’s true (although I may be slightly biased). This is not the kind of city you come to and kick your feet up. Creativity is far from scarce and the competition is fierce. We’ve all heard about the big name start-ups like Foursquare, Tumblr...
Don’t you hate it when stuff from your pockets gets lost in the cracks between couch cushions? The design firm Daisuke Motogi Architecture decided to make this a feature, rather than a bug. The “Lost in Sofa Chair” comes with many different cracks into which you can store books, phones, and other implements that you want nearby. Link via CrunchGear | Photo: Daisuke Motogi Architecture
Three years ago, we featured the amazing papercut letters of artist Annie Vought. Since that time, she’s added extensively to her portfolio. The above image isn’t a photograph of just a piece of paper. It’s a letter written on paper, and then all non-inked areas cut out. This work is entitled “PS No more Calls for You from Sexy Girls.” Link via Dude Craft
Edward Horsford takes photographs of water balloons being popped. The results create the impression of water hanging in midair: “My camera is really the least important part of the shots,” Horsford writes in an e-mail. The trick seems to be in the timing of the flash. He sets a timer on his camera to take a long exposure of 1 to 2 seconds, and if the flash fires within that time, he gets an image. He uses a special gizmo with a microphone that triggers the flashes when it picks up a certain level of sound (i.e...

Since converting my blog to Standard Theme a few weeks ago (read about why here), several people have written me to ask, “What WordPress Plugins are you now using?” Rather than answer these people individually, I thought I would post my current list in the hopes of stimulating your thinking plus getting a few ideas from you. Photo courtesy of ©iStockphoto.com/gwmullis One of my favorite things about WordPress as a blogging platform is the ability to extend its features through plugins. Unfortunately, the more...
A short, but significant list of [6] Links that will change your life. 1. Check out the 2011 TED prize winner JR. Amazing stuff. 2. Speaking of TED you have to watch this video by Mark Bittman called “What’s Wrong With What We Eat.” A video presentation about food and global sustainability (18 mins long). 3. One more TED video: Muslim poet Booaa Mohammed shares his poem called “I’ll Kill You All” (5 mins). This is a must-see. NOTE: watch it all the way to the end. Powerful. Gripping. 4. Ever heard of the site The...

As I’ve mentioned before, I consider Netflix to be an excellent low-cost alternative to cable. Having Netflix gives you access not only to almost every DVD known to man (sent to you in the mail), but you also have access to their extensive streaming library. In other words, if you have high speed internet at home, you can watch a lot of movies and TV series (without commercial interruption) at no additional cost with just a button click. Not bad for $9 a month. So, what do we use it for? In the evenings, we certainly...

Today I gave my last conference talk for a while. Next year I’m going to focus on our own 37signals events. It feels good to not have any external speaking obligations in 2011. At the end of the talk I took some Q&A. The last question was asked by a guy in the front row. He said “What’s your take on the true value of a university education?” I shared my general opinion (summary: great socially, but not realistic enough academically) and ended with a description of a course I’d like to see taught in college...
The author of the web's first worm-virus, teamed with a man who dresses as a medieval warrior and goes to battle on the weekends and a woman who follows World of Warcraft, acupuncture and ballet, have raised $24 million dollars to storm the gates of the Google Castle. They got incredible press coverage when their new search engine, called Blekko, launched this week - but they are probably going to get slaughtered. In the meantime, they have provided an opportunity for countless other freaks and geeks to use...
This is a tool I’ve been using for a long time and it has helped me tremendously in terms of the time I’ve saved and things I’ve got done. Called Hyperwords, this is an add-on that adds a bunch of stuff to your right-click menu that helps you do things like check the definition of a word, search Google, check Wikipedia, translate text from one language to another and much more in just a click. Initially a Firefox extension only, it has since been ported to the Chrome and Safari web browsers as well. www...
